What are Respiratory Problems?

What is a respiratory disease?

In medical terms, a respiratory disease refers to a pathological condition that affects the tissues and organs that make the exchange of gas possible in case of higher organisms including conditions of the URT (upper respiratory tract), bronchi, trachea, alveoli, bronchioles, pleural cavity and pleura as well as the muscles and nerves of breathing. It is of two types- Upper and lower respiratory problem.

Respiratory problems range from self-limiting and mild such as the common cold to a life-threatening entity such as lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, bronchitis and bacterial pneumonia. These diseases affect the air passage which includes the lungs, bronchi and the nasal passage. It can also result in acute conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

Causes of respiratory diseases

Inhalation of any toxic material, accidents or harmful lifestyle habits such as incessant smoking are some of the most common factors resulting in respiratory diseases. Infections, genetic factors or any other factor that is likely to affect lungs’ development are said to directly or indirectly cause respiratory problems.

Symptoms of respiratory diseases

The symptoms of lower and upper respiratory infections largely depend on the type and severity of the problem. However some of the classic symptoms include:
  • Stuffy, runny nose
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Sneezing
  • Ear ache
  • Malaise
  • Cough
  • Fever
Try natural respiratory herbs
  • Place about 2-3 drops of any of the following oil (Lavender, Tea Tree, Clove Bud or Geranium) on the palm and rub the hands together to warm the oil. Once it is warm, bring the hands close to the mouth and nose and slowly and deeply breathe it for 3-5 minutes. Relax and then again breathe normally for about 2-3 minutes. Repeat deep breaths again.
